Through a sensitive walk, we'll get as close as possible to the secret world of the ancients, and follow in the illustrious footsteps of the philosopher Pierre Gassendi. Adopting his formula "ambolu ergo sum" (I walk therefore I am), a response to the "cogito ergo sum" (I think therefore I am) of his contemporary René Descartes, we will glide from clued ridges and wooden scrubland, for a total immersion in the fascinating universe of the artists of the Gassendi Museum's mountain art collection.

Refuge d'art is an artistic device by Andy Goldsworthy, in the region of Digne-les-Bains, in Haute-Provence. Still in progress, it was initiated by Nadine Gomez, curator of the Gassendi Museum, who invited him in 1995 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Haute-Provence geological reserve. It is the world's largest collection of the artist's works. This route follows lost hiking trails in the heart of the UNESCO Geopark of Haute-Provence. It connects the Sentinelles, imposing dry stone cairns, as well as isolated buildings in the middle of nature, renovated, each of which houses a work by the artist.

On our itinerary, we'll be passing through most of the Sentinelles and Refuges d'art, and sleeping in two of them. On the other three nights, we'll be staying in comfortable gîtes. We'll also be discovering the work of other artists: herman de vries, Joan Fontcuberta and Paul-Armand Gette.

On foot, we'll cross landscapes of exceptional beauty, forests of beech or black pine and villages forgotten by time. We'll cross mountain passes amidst alpine meadows and hike alongside wild streams. In these seldom-visited mountains - home to wolves, chamois, eagles, vultures and so many others - we'll contemplate the geological splendors that nature has built up over millions of years. These include the monumental Vélodrome d'Esclangon, or the clues de Barles.

We'll end our journey where the whole adventure began: at the Musée Gassendi in Digne, withAndy Goldsworthy'sRiver of Earth.

Operated by the agency Vercors escapades and under its registration

On request, all year round (spring and autumn periods recommended).
https://artenchemin.fr/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Itinerance-6j-4-1.jpg
35
{"1":
All meals (dinners, picnics and breakfasts) "},"2":
Accommodation"},"3":
Programmed internal transfers"},"4":
The guide's service "},"5":
Visits (visit to the Gassendi Museum)"},"6":
In many accommodations, drinks (tea, coffee, wine) are included. It's also a state of mind that refuses to depend exclusively on modern infrastructures (tarmac roads, automobile transport, etc.). This is possible by choosing light equipment - which is not necessarily expensive - and keeping only the bare essentials. For us, comfort is all about carrying a light backpack, not carrying what's superfluous.

- For years, we've been choosing this way of traveling out of a sense of consistency. Firstly, because we love the freedom it brings. Secondly, out of respect for nature, we believe it's preferable to keep luggage transport by vehicle to a minimum. Lastly, our taste takes us to isolated, beautiful and peaceful places, far from road networks and difficult to access. In addition, we feel that this is a good way to discover the work of Andy Goldsworthy and other artists who have spread throughout our mountains.

- Consequently, if you strictly follow our recommendations (see equipment list at the end of this document), the weight of your rucksack, excluding food and water, may not exceed 5 kg (you'll essentially be carrying enough to sleep comfortably, a few changes of clothes and toiletries) and must under no circumstances exceed 8 kg, as you'll need to add food and 2 liters of water for the day (approx. 3 kg). In the gîtes, you can wash your change of clothes yourself.

- In the various gîtes where we'll be staying, we'll have deposited food supplies that we'll take with us for dinners and breakfasts in the art refuges. These provisions are prepared almost exclusively with organic and/or local produce, bought in bulk, with little plastic or non-recyclable packaging, with the aim of achieving zero waste by the end of our stay. We'll be cooking together in the refuges d'art, and you'll discover that it's possible to enjoy tasty cuisine simply by bivouacking.
