What to expect

Take the time to follow nature's singular rhythm, with nothing at stake but its contemplation. Here, a work of art unfolds with every step, in the splendor of the forgotten mountains and valleys of Haute-Provence.

Refuge d'art is a unique itinerary designed by British artist Andy Goldsworthy: a 10-day walk over a 150 km route through the magnificent landscapes of theUNESCO Geopark of Haute-Provence, punctuated by artistic creations inviting you to rest. The trail links three Sentinelles, imposing dry-stone cairns, with six isolated buildings in the heart of nature - former farms, sheepfolds or renovated chapels - each of which houses a singular work by the artist. This is the world's largest collection of Andy Goldworthy's work. During our itinerary, we'll talk to all the Presidia and Refuges d'art, and sleep in three of them. We'll also see works created in the wilderness by other artists, such as herman de vries and Joan Fontcuberta. Through these wild mountains, between vast forests, alpine meadows and clear streams, we'll follow ancient paths dotted with abandoned villages and traces of peasant life of yesteryear. In the heart of the Haute-Provence Geological Reserve, we'll also contemplate the splendors formed by nature over millions of years, such as the Barles clues and the monumental Vélodrome d'Esclangon. We'll end our journey where the whole adventure began: at the Musée Gassendi in Digne, withAndy Goldsworthy'sRiver of Earth. Programmed on request only for groups of up to 7 people.
